Lewis Hamilton won the Spanish Grand Prix at the Montmelo circuit outside of Barcelona on Sunday to return to the top of the drivers' championship.

Hamilton finished ahead of his Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas as Mercedes claimed their fifth consecutive Grand Prix win.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen finished third to claim the final spot on the podium as the Ferrari duo of Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc, who twice swapped positions in the race under team orders, finished fourth and fifth.

The British driver began the race second on the pole behind Bottas, but was able to go into the lead on the first corner and began to draw away.

A crash between Lance Stroll and Lando Norris saw the safety car on the track which saw Hamilton's lead neutralized but was able to pull away again to finish just over four seconds ahead of his team-mate and 7.6 seconds ahead of third placed Verstrappen.

"The Mercedes cars were just too quick today," admitted Verstrappen after the race, while Hamilton said that he was pleased with his car's performance at Montmelo.

"It's a great car, we don't always get along, but I am pleased that we were able to settle our differences," said Hamilton.
