Former Spain coach Julen Lopetegui was confirmed as the new coach of Sevilla on Tuesday.

Lopetegui has signed a three-year contract with the side that finished sixth in last season's Liga Santander.

Lopetegui led Spain to last summer's World Cup finals without losing a game, but was sensationally sacked by the Spanish Football Federation and replaced by Fernando Hierro on the eve of the tournament after Real Madrid confirmed he would replace Zinedine Zidane at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Lopetegui lasted just four months at Real Madrid and was sacked following a 5-1 defeat away to FC Barcelona at the end of October. He was in charge for just 14 games, of which Madrid won just six.

However, despite his failure at Real Madrid, Lopetegui has built a solid reputation as a coach with good work at Rayo Vallecano and with the Real Madrid youth system before coaching Spain's Under 19 and Under 20 sides.

He then joined Portuguese side Porto, spending a season and a half in Portugal, before being relieved of his duties. On returning to Spain he was made Under-21 coach for the national team, progressing to the full team after Vicente del Bosque's retirement and guiding them to the World Cup finals ahead of those dramatic days in Russia last June.
