Bayern defender Mats Hummels will return to his former club Borussia Dortmund after three years, both Bundesliga clubs confirmed on Wednesday.

The former Germany international is set to join Dortmund for the second time and will, pending on the medical at Dortmund, sign a three-year deal with the "BVB" according to the kicker Sportmagazin.

"The Bundesliga clubs Borussia Dortmund and FC Bayern Munich have reached an agreement in principal on the transfer of defender Mats Hummels," Dortmund announced in an official statement via the club's official homepage.

The 30-year-old centre back has already played for Dortmund from 2008 until 2016, initially on loan, and lifted two Bundesliga title and one German Cup with head coach Jurgen Klopp. In his eight years with the "BVB" he scored overall 25 goals in 309 competitive appearances before joining league rivals, and his youth club Bayern Munich in 2016.

During his three-year spell with the German record champions, where he marked eight goals in 116 encounters, he was able to reap three Bundesliga titles and one German Cup.

Both sides have agreed to keep silence over further contract details. The transfer will be completed as soon as Mats Hummels passes the medical in Dortmund.
