Atletico Madrid appear to be on the verge of signing 19-year-old Portuguese forward Joao Felix from Benfica after the Portuguese club confirmed it has received an offer of 126 million euros (143 million Us dollars) for the player.

Benfica released a statement to the Portuguese Securities Market Commission on Thursday which read: "Benfica informs, under the terms and for the purpose of article 248-A of the Portuguese Securities Code, that Atletico Madrid have submitted a proposal for the acquisition of the sporting rights of the player Joao Felix for a total amount of 126m Euros."

Atletico's offer is higher than the 120 million euros of the buyout clause on Felix's contract. If Atletico chose to activate the buyout clause, they would have to pay all of that money at the same time, while the 126 million euros could be paid in various installments.

Felix burst onto the scene last season, scoring 15 goals in 26 matches for Benfica and Atletico have had to work hard to sign him ahead of Premier League clubs Manchester City and Manchester United.

The youngster will help replace Antoine Griezmann, who announced earlier in the summer he will be leaving Atletico once the buyout clause on his contract falls from 200 to 120 million euros on July 1st.

Griezmann is expected to join FC Barcelona, although he has yet to confirm where he will play his football next season.
