Forty students majoring in ice and snow sports service and promotion graduated from Beijing College of Sports on Wednesday. The new graduates have received three years of education in skills and knowledge related to winter sports, and a majority have already found jobs.

The new major was launched at Beijing College of Sports in September 2016. It was the first such specialized program in Beijing's higher education institutions. The program recruited students from Beijing and Hebei province, with the aim of providing talent support for the preparation of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and for the national strategy of developing ice and snow industries.

"I had only watched skiing on TV and never tried it back then, and I thought it was pretty cool," said Li Zequn, one of the 40 new graduates. "I'm sure that more and more people will try skiing after Beijing won the bid for Winter Olympics." The 22-year-old, who has landed a job at a ski coaching company, said he is looking forward to volunteering at the 2022 Winter Olympics.

"It is our mission to clear the way for students, preparing them for employment with theoretical knowledge and college-enterprise cooperation," said Shi Fenghua, principal of Beijing College of Sports. According to Shi, the school carries out close cooperation with businesses in ice and snow industries and provides students with specialized courses, support from industry experts and professional coaches, and abundant practical training opportunities.

Wu Bin, CEO of Carving Ski, said he has great confidence in these graduates, and that his winter sports company has already recruited some of them. He added that there had been a shortage of talents in ice and snow sports given the industry's growth.

Notably, a number of the new graduates have already won recognition from the industry for their abilities. Four won the first prize in the national contest for national sports vocational skills of advanced vocation schools, one was named a top 10 coach during internship, and another two were selected to assist the organizing and preparations for the ski competition in the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.
