The International Ski Federation (FIS) China Beijing Roller Ski World Cup 2019 opened on Thursday at Beijing Olympic Celebration Square. Sarah Lewis, FIS general secretary; Gou Zhongwen, director of the General Administration of Sport of China; and Zhang Jiandong, vice mayor of Beijing, attended the opening ceremony.

The competition takes place from Thursday to Saturday, including the 1,500-meter sprint, the 200-meter super sprint, and the mass start race. In addition, an amateur competition for the public will also be held. The World Cup marks the first Class A event of the FIS foundation event held in China and the first Roller Ski World Cup held in East Asia.

Lewis said this event is a historic step in preparing the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and Paralympics.

Agreeing with the FIS general secretary, Vice Mayor Zhang said the Roller Ski World Cup will not only bring a joyful atmosphere to Beijing but also solidify the foundation for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and Paralympics.
