AFC Asian Cup China 2023 kick off meeting starts in Beijing

The journey to the next edition of Asia's pinnacle stage passed a significant milestone on Thursday after the kick off meeting for the AFC Asian Cup China 2023 was held in Beijing.

The AFC delegation, led by the AFC General Secretary Dato' Windsor John, met with the country's top sports officials including H.E. Gou Zhongwen, Minister of General Administration of Sport of the People's Republic of China and H.E. Du Zhaocai, Vice-Minister of General Administration of Sport of the People's Republic of China and one of the AFC's five representatives on the FIFA Council.

Dato Windsor re-affirmed the Asian football family's confidence in China's ability to stage an exceptional AFC Asian Cup in 2023, before outlining the AFC's Vision, Mission, expectations, as well as key deliverables for the upcoming tournament.

In his address to H.E. Gou Zhongwen, AFC General Secretary Dato' Windsor John said: ‘Today marks an important step on the journey to delivering the greatest ever AFC Asian Cup here in the People's Republic of China.

"The AFC comes in the spirit of co-operation and a willingness to work with the Chinese Football Association (CFA) and the Chinese Government in realising this ambition.

"We have no doubts that China PR will stage a true celebration of Asian football that will be remembered in the years to come.

"And we have every faith that the AFC Asian Cup China 2023 will serve as a launch pad to develop a true legacy, for the global game and for China PR.

"And most importantly, inspire a nation and transform football into the number one sport in the country."

The CFA presented the list of prospective host cities for the 2023 competition and also highlighted the immense interests from provinces in China – with as many as 20 cities signalling their interest in being a part of the biggest spectacle of Asian football.

The AFC and CFA will now undergo the selection process for the host cities and this is expected to be completed by the end of 2019. Meetings will continue on Friday and Saturday.

The second round of the Asian Qualifiers for the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar and AFC Asian Cup China 2023 kicks off on September 5.
