Arsenal have completed the surprise signing of Chelsea defender David Luiz, landing the Brazilian for £8m.

The closing of the transfer window in England on Thursday has seen several clubs manage to get big deals over the line.

Tottenham Hotspurs signed Fulham's Ryan Sessegnon on a six-year deal and also tying up a season long loan deal for creative midfielder Giovani Lo Celso from Real Betis with the option to make the deal permanent at the end of the season.

Across north London, Arsenal finally tied up the signing of left back Kieran Tierney from Celtic as they look to bolster their defense.

Arsenal had been expected to sign defender David Luiz from Chelsea while selling Alex Iwobi to Everton, but by 19:15 local time (15 minutes after the deadline for deal sheets had closed) there was still no confirmation of those signings.

Striker Andy Carroll returns to Newcastle United after an eight-year hiatus for an undisclosed fee from West Ham United, while Newcastle also completed the signing of Swedish international defender Emil Krafth from French outfit Amiens.

West Ham covered Carroll's departure by signing Swiss international forward Albian Ajeti from Basel.

Chelsea allowed former Leicester City midfielder Danny Drinkwater to move to Burnley to end Drinkwater's disappointing spell in south London, while Brighton were also active taking Australian international midfielder Aaron Mooy and young defender Romaric Yapi to the club.

Leicester City signed midfielder Dennis Praet from Sampdoria, while newly promoted Sheffield United reached agreement to take midfielder Muhamed Besic on loan from Everton.

Watford completed the signing of winger Ismaila Sarr from French side Rennes for a club record fee of 30 million pounds (about 36.3 million U.S. dollars), while veteran goalkeeper Scott Carson joins Manchester City on a free transfer to become the club's backup keeper.

Although other markets in Europe do not close until the end of the month, Thursday also saw Romelu Lukaku leave Manchester United to join Italian giants Inter Milan.
