Manchester City's German international winger Leroy Sane faces several months on the sidelines after damaging his cruciate knee ligaments.

Sane limped out of the Community Shield final on Sunday and on Thursday his club confirmed he will need an operation.

"Leroy will have surgery in the coming week," read the statement, adding, "Manchester City will provide Leroy with all the support and guidance he needs, and everyone connected with the club wishes him a quick and full recovery."

Sane, who has two years left on his contract, had been the center of speculation over a return to Germany with Bayern Munich and although he has been offered a new contract by the Premier League champions, he still has to put pen to paper.

Manchester City have made four signings in the transfer window which closed this Thursday evening, with central midfielder Rodrigo Hernandez joining from Atletico Madrid, along with attacking right back Joao Cancelo from Juventus, defender Angelino from PSV Eindhoven and veteran goalkeeper Scott Carson from Derby County.
