The structural construction of the Wukesong Ice Sports Center was completed in June, and the stadium is expected to be put into use by the end of the year, according to the Beijing Municipal Commission of Development and Reform.

It would also serve as a training ground for the city's youth athletes in ice sports, as well as a landmark on Chang'an Street.

The ice sports center is built by Wukesong Culture and Sports Center Company with its self-raised funds. With a total construction area of about 38,860 square meters, the ice sports center consists of two floors underground and two floors aboveground, with two indoor ice rinks and one outdoor ice rink. Facilities also under construction are stands, lounges for spectators, auxiliary rooms for training, equipment rooms, public halls, and transportation spaces.

The venue is designed by well-known designer Zhu Xiaodi. The Energy Conservation Office of Tongheng Design Institute of Tsinghua University is responsible for the ultra-low energy design. And many other well-known design institutions from home and abroad have also played a part in the design.

Of cutting-edge design, the venue will be equipped with first-class hardware and supporting facilities for the Olympic-level ice hockey events, as well as the international standard performance and choreographic lighting system.

The innovative building technology is a highlight of the construction. When the construction is completed, it will become the world's largest ultra-low-energy sports building, and the first stadium in China to adopt a CO2 direct cooling transcritical ice making system. The refrigerant is green and environment-friendly, enabling low energy consumption and efficient heat recovery to create better ice quality.

Once completed, the ice sports center will host international and domestic top-level ice sports events. It will set up a professional ice sports club to undertake teaching and training of ice hockey, figure skating and speed skating, and provide ice-related performance and entertainment services.

Meanwhile, it will be developed into an exchange platform for ice hockey talents, and will set up flagship stores of internationally prestigious brands of ice and snow sports equipment.

There will also be an underground passage linking the Wukesong Ice Sports Center and the nearby Wukesong Arena - an ice hockey rink for the 2022 Winter Olympics, allowing people to access the two venues freely.
