Former Italy and Roma midfielder Daniele de Rossi scored on his Boca Juniors debut, but couldn't prevent his side's elimination from the Copa Argentina.

De Rossi made a dream start at the La Bombonera by heading in from a corner against second-tier side Almagro in their second-round match on Tuesday.

But the night turned sour for the 36-year-old and his Boca teammates. De Rossi was shown a yellow card for a bad foul shortly after his goal and was taken off in the 77th minute.

Juan Manuel Martinez then struck an equalizer for the visitors to ensure the result would be decided on penalties. Former Manchester United, Manchester City and Juventus forward Carlos Tevez was the only Boca player to convert his spot-kick as Almagro prevailed 3-1 in the shootout.

De Rossi, who signed an 18-month contract with Boca last month, was released by Roma in May after making his 616th and final appearance for the club in a 2-1 home win over Parma. He later said that he still "feels like a player" and wanted a "new adventure."

He has been capped 117 times for Italy and was a part of the Azzurri team that won the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
