China's number one Wang Qiang defeated Belgium's Alison Van Uytvanck to make the third round of the US Open women's singles on Thursday.

Wang, seeded 18th in the Grand Slam event, met some challenge in the opening set, but still claimed the victory at 7-5, 6-4 in one hour and 39 minutes.

In the 11th game of the opening set, Wang broke her opponent and then held serve to claim the set at 7-5. In the second set, Uytvanck, ranked 68th in the world, lost steam and conceded the defeat at 6-4.

Both players struck 19 winners in the match, but Wang had just 23 unforced errors to 37 from her opponent.

Wang's reward will be a third round clash against the winner of the match between Kristina Mladenovic and Fiona Ferro, both from France.
