No.5 seed Lucas Pouille and No.6 seed Nick Kyrgios both made first-round exits while third-seeded Gael Monfils advanced to the quarterfinals of the ATP Zhuhai Open on Wednesday.

Frenchman Monfils survived a two-hour marathon to reach the final eight after overcoming Briton Cameron Norrie 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.

"I'm not quite yet ready, because of the jet lag. I'm still battling, but I'm quite happy I could pull up this one tonight. It was important for my confidence," Monfils said.

Monfils will face Spain's Albert Ramos-Vinolas, who saved four set points in the first set to a 7-6(2), 6-3 win over Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic.

In a first round match, Kyrgios squandered his 4-1 lead in the first set, losing to Italian Andreas Seppi 7-6 (5), 6-1. The 36-year-old will play Chinese wild carder Zhang Zhizhen for a final eight spot.

Earlier in the day, No. 5 seed Pouille crashed out after losing 6-7(4), 2-6 to South Korean qualifier Kwon Soon-woo. The 21-year-old Korean will play Bosnia and Herzegovina qualifier Damir Dzumhur in the second round.
