Tottenham Hotspur coach Mauricio Pochettino is looking for the January transfer window to help solve the problems which have blighted his side's start to the season.

The poor form of last season's Champions League runners-up was laid bare on Tuesday night as they were knocked out of the Carabao Cup after a penalty shootout away to Colchester United, who are currently 10th in League Two, the fourth tier of English football.

The defeat means Spurs have not won in their first five away games of the campaign and has highlighted the effects of a summer where Pochettino was unable to make the signings he wanted or to sell players such as Danny Rose, Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen.

Meanwhile, Christian Eriksen, who was linked to a move to Real Madrid, was one of the players to miss in the shootout.

"January is a good opportunity to try to fix this type of situation. Then the next transfer window. That's the problem when something happens you cannot control... To keep successful in football you need to be different every season," said Pochettino after the game.

"We talked a lot in pre-season... I knew it would be a tough situation," continued the coach, who admitted he has an "unsettled squad."

"Maybe performances are good but we need this mental connection, this energy to be all together, not to have different agendas in the squad. We need time again to build that togetherness," he said.

"We are working hard" continued the coach when asked about January transfer business.
