Struggling Spanish La Liga side Espanyol have sacked head coach David Gallego, replacing him with former Sevilla and Girona manager Pablo Machin.

Gallego leaves Espanyol second from bottom in Spain's top flight on five points, with the club winning just one La Liga match from their opening eight.

However, the club - which counts Chinese international forward Wu Lei among its ranks - has had more success in European football, making it through three qualifying rounds to reach the Europa League group stage, picking up four points from their opening two games.

Gallego's successor Machin notably led Girona into La Liga for the first time in 2017, and surprised many by avoiding relegation and finishing 10th the following year.

Machin success with Girona saw him appointed head coach of Sevilla for the 2018-19 season, but after a strong start to the season his side faded away and he was relieved of his duties in March.
