China's top player Wang Qiang crashed out of the WTA Tianjin Open after being defeated by the 125th-ranked qualifier Heather Watson of Britain 6-3, 6-0 in the round of 16 on Thursday.
Wang, who rocketed into her maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal at the 2019 U.S. Open, could hardly find her rhythm facing her aggressive opponent.
"I did my homework, but I was not particularly exciting during the match, that's why I lost," the No. 2 seed said after the match.
Another home favorite Peng Shuai was also knocked out, beaten by the third-seeded Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine 6-2, 6-4, while Zheng Saisai withdrew from the competition due to an injury.
Wang Yafan, who ousted defending champion Caroline Garcia, came out the only Chinese having made the quarterfinals out of a total of 11. Wang will next face Swedish player Rebecca Peterson.
