Inter Milan's Alexis Sanchez faces up to three months on the sidelines after suffering an ankle injury while playing for Chile in their goalless draw with Colombia on Saturday.

The Manchester United loanee was forced off in the 88th minute of the friendly in Alicante, Spain, and initial tests indicate he could require surgery, according to Chile manager Reinaldo Rueda.

"It will be up to [Inter] to decide whether or not he needs an operation," Rueda told reporters on Monday. "We have to wait and see and we are monitoring it closely because he is decisive for us."

Chile team officials said Sanchez had traveled back to Italy to undergo an MRI scan under the supervision of Inter's medical staff. He has been tentatively diagnosed with strained ankle ligaments.

"If he has surgery he will be out for two to three months, if not, it could be weeks," Rueda continued. "It depends on the club. Losing Alexis is a shame, he was in good spirits and super motivated."

Sanchez, 30, has made four appearances across all competitions for Inter Milan since joining the club on a year-long loan in July.
