Southampton coach Ralph Hasenhuttl put his hands up and accepted responsibility after what was almost certainly the worst night of his coaching career as Southampton were beaten 9-0 at home to Leicester City on Friday night.

Leicester strikers Ayoze Perez and Jamie Vardy each scored hat-tricks as Leicester equaled Manchester United's 9-0 home win over Ipswich Town in 1995, but it is the first time a Premier League team has ever won 9-0 away from home: and consequently for a downbeat Hasenhuttl, the first time a side has ever lost by that score in front of their fans.

Southampton's task wasn't helped by Ryan Bertrand being sent off in the build up to the opening goal of the game, but the coach had few excuses to offer.

"I take 100 per cent responsibility for this result today and it was no performance from my team, this cannot happen in this way," said Hasenhuttl.

"The best thing in the stadium, besides the opposition, were the crowd who stayed in the stadium. How they act is more than we deserve, and I apologize for this no performance today," he said, criticizing his side.

"We were not committed enough and with how strong Leicester were, we just couldn't defend against it... There was no defending at all. If you ask me if I'm shocked tonight... I've never had such an experience in my entire managing career," admitted the Southampton coach.

Unsurprisingly Leicester's Brendon Rodgers was a much happier man.

"It was the perfect performance.. We showed a wonderful demonstration of how to play against 10 men.

"Of course, the result and performance is perfect. But the players trust and believe in how we work. And we have young players who are only going to gain even more confidence. We will get better. We certainly won't just be content with what we're doing," he commented.
