Borussia Monchengladbach recaptured the lead in the standings after moving 4-2 past Eintracht Frankfurt to close the 9th round in Bundesliga on Sunday.

The "Foals" smoothed the way for the win with two first half goals. Frankfurt staged a spirited second half but the hosts showed no mercy on home soil and secured all three points in the closing period.

Both sides wasted no time and traded attacks in the opening stages as Frankfurt's Daichi Kamada and Goncalo Paciencia sent the first warnings before Denis Zakaria and Marcus Thuram came close for the hosts.

Monchengladbach gained momentum as the match progressed and were rewarded with the opener at the half hour mark when Thuram tapped home Breel Embolo's pinpoint cross at the back post.

Frankfurt responded well as Paciencia tested Monchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer with a header moments later. However, goals were scored at the other end of the pitch as Oscar Wendt hammered home a rebound to double the advantage before the break.

After the restart, Monchengladbach started where they left off and pressed Frankfurt into the defence. Nevertheless, Frankfurt were able to reduce the arrears against the run of the play when Kamada's assist allowed Danny da Costa to slot home from close range.

Frankfurt gained the upper hand and produced clearcut opportunities but for all that Kamada missed twice from promising position in quick succession.

Clinical Monchengladbach punished Frankfurt's wastefulness in the 75th minute when Nico Elvedi nodded home Laszlo Benes' free kick to restore the two-goal lead.

However, the two-goal lead lasted only four minutes as Martin Hinteregger headed home Kamada's corner kick into the back post.

Marco Rose's men had the last laugh though as Zakaria sealed the deal with the 4-2 lead after slotting home Lars Stindl's build-up work with five minutes remaining.

With the win, Borussia Monchengladbach defend the first place whereas Eintracht Frankfurt slipped to the 9th position of the table.

Elsewhere, runner up Wolfsburg remain unbeaten still they slipped to the 4th place after sharing the spoils with bottom side Augsburg following a goalless stalemate.
