Real Madrid produced one of their best displays of the season but fell asleep in defense in the closing minutes to allow Paris Saint Germain to snatch a 2-2 draw in the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium on Tuesday night.

The result means PSG will finish top of their group, while Madrid are into the last 16 of the competition in second place with just 8 points.

The 1-1 draw between Galatasaray and Bruges earlier in the evening meant that Real Madrid were assured their place in the knockout competition before the game even kicked off and that perhaps took some of the pressure off Zinedine Zidane's players who produced their best 45 minutes of the season in the first half.

Eden Hazard started the move which led to the opening goal as he crossed the pitch with the ball glued to his feet. The ball ended up with Isco whose shot hit the post and allowed Karim Benzema to clip home the rebound.

Former Madrid keeper Keylor Navas then did well to deny Tony Kroos, who tried his luck directly from a corner, and Marcelo, who had a shot from distance, while at the other end Thibaut Courtois produced good stops from Kylian Mbappe and Maro Veratti.

Navas then produced a stunning save to block a bullet shot from Dani Carvajal before Courtois had a let off just before halftime.

The keeper was shown a red card for apparently committing a penalty on Mauri Icardi, but the VAR rescinded the referee's decision for a slight push on Marcelo in the build up to the foul.

Neymar came into the game for PSG at the start of the second half, but the best early chance was at the other end as Navas produced another good save to deny Isco.

Hazard then had to limp off after receiving a knock and was replaced by Gareth Bale, but that didn't affect Madrid as Benzema netted his second of the night 11 minutes from time with a neat header from a Marcelo cross.

Mbappe pulled a goal back immediately afterwards after a mix up in defense allowed him to tap home from close range.

In the 83rd minute it was 2-2 as PSG substitute Pablo Sarabia (who began his career at Madrid) equalized with a left foot shot as the home defense again went to sleep.

That led to a frantic last 10 minutes with Mbappe hitting the side netting in injury time before Bale smashed a free kick against the post with virtually the last kick of the game.
