Real Madrid moved to the top of the Liga Santander on Saturday with a hard-fought 2-1 win away to Alaves.

Second half goals from defenders Sergio Ramos and Dani Carvajal, while Lucas Perez scored a penalty for Alaves after Ramos had fouled Joselu in the Alaves area.

Ramos opened the scoring in the 52nd minute with a header from a free kick and Carvajal sealed the win from close range after Alaves keeper Fernando Pacheco had pushed Isco's header onto the post.

The win takes Madrid above FC Barcelona, who will visit Atletico Madrid on Sunday night.

Real Sociedad also had a good day with an impressive 4-1 win at home to local rivals Eibar.

Robin le Normand opened the scoring in the 25th minute, not long after coming on to replace the injured Aritz Elustondo and although Pepe Diop equalized 10 minutes later, Real Sociedad ran riot in the second half and sealed the points with further goals from Mikel Oyarzabal, Willian Jose and Martin Odegaard, who curled in an impressive 25 yard effort which lifts 'La Real' temporarily up to the fourth.

Betis survived a second half fightback away to Mallorca to claim a 2-1 win. Joaquin Sanchez opened the scoring from the penalty spot for the visitors in the 7th minute and Nabil Fekir doubled their lead in the 33rd minute as they completely dominated the first half.

Mallorca recovered after the break and Lago Junior got them back in the game with a 55th minute penalty before Betis keeper Joel Robles made several important saves to give deny Mallorca a second goal.

Youngster Ferran Torres gave Valencia all three points in the east coast derby against Villarreal with a 70th minute goal.

The two teams went in 0-0 at half time but Rodrigo Moreno opened the scoring four minutes after the break for Valencia. Andre-Frank Zambo equalized in a counter-attack in the 54th minute, but Ferran's well-taken goal 20 minutes from time saw three points stay in Mestalla and condemned Villarreal to their fourth defeat in five games.

The round of games kicked off on Friday night as Valladolid keeper Jordi Masip produced a series of saves to frustrate Celta Vigo and keep the score 0-0 between the two sides in the Balaidos Stadium.
