Clinical Bayer Leverkusen stunned wasteful Bayern Munich 2-1 on the first-half brace from Leon Bailey at the 13th round of Bundesliga on Saturday.

The defending champions controlled the proceedings for most of the time but Bayer Leverkusen staged a clinical chance conversion and snatched an away win.

Bayern took the reins from the start and had the golden chance to break the deadlock with just nine minutes played but Serge Gnabry rattled only the woodwork.

The visitors cut a better figure at the other end of the pitch as Kevin Volland's through ball allowed Leon Bailey to beat onrushing Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer against the run of the game with 10 minutes played.

The hosts pressed forward but still they had to wait until the half hour mark when Thomas Muller levelled the scores with a deflected shot from the edge of the box.

It was however a short-lived joy for the "Bavarians" as Leverkusen retook the lead with their next attack as Volland's through ball found Bailey, who made no mistake to beat Neuer for the second time.

Bayern tried to respond and should have restored parity before the break. Lars Bender's last-second tackle denied Ivan Perisic a tap home into the open goal.

After the restart, Leverkusen almost shocked Bayern with the 3-1 lead but Neuer was on guard to defuse Nadiem Amiri's shot on target.

However, Bayern continued on the front foot and gained the upper hand but still they were not able to level the scores as Lukas Hradecky denied Robert Lewandowski and Muller one after the other.

Leverkusen remained dangerous on the fast break and had a promising chance through Moussa Diaby, who forced Neuer into action.

In the closing stages, Leverkusen were reduced to 10 men as Jonathan Tah fouled Philippe Coutinho as the last man outside of the box.

Nevertheless, Bayern pressed frenetically but were unable to beat Hradecky for the equalizer.

The victory moved Bayer Leverkusen to the 7th place. Meanwhile Bayern Munich slipped to the 4th place with a three point gap to front runners Leipzig.

The following fixtures are scheduled for Sunday: Borussia Monchengladbach clash with Freiburg, and Wolfsburg see Werder Bremen.
