The main structure of the National Indoor Stadium extension was successfully completed on Wednesday. As one of the major venues renovated for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, the stadium will host ice hockey events during the Games. According to the construction authorities, the whole project is scheduled to be complete by September 2020.

Located close to the National Stadium and the National Aquatic Center in Chaoyang district, the National Indoor Stadium is one of the landmarks in the Olympics area. Its extension structure is designed to resemble a Chinese folding fan. It has a total construction area of about 13,726 square meters consisting of three floors, including one underground.

A person in charge at the Beijing Major Projects Construction Headquarters Office said that the construction process of National Indoor Stadium has taken into account the need for a "green Olympics" and sustainable development, including the building of two standard ice hockey rinks, one for the official games and the other for warm-up. The two rinks can also convert quickly between ice rink and regular floor, which provides flexibility for uses after the Games.

In the future, the stadium is planned as a venue for promoting cross-sector cooperation, integrating the ice and snow industry with culture, tourism, and technology.
