The Beijing National Aquatics Center, known as Water Cube or Ice Cube, was awarded the 2019 Sport and Sustainable Architecture Prize of the International Olympic Committee on Dec. 26.
After a renovation and transformation, the Beijing National Aquatics Center will serve as a venue for curling and wheelchair curling events during the 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics, which will be held in Beijing and Zhangjiakou, Hebei province, making it the first winter Olympic venue that builds curling tracks above a swimming pool.
The project has saved construction costs, and helped to realize sustainable development of Olympic heritage, as the natatorium used to serve as the main venue for the Olympic games in Beijing in 2008.
According to the management of the natatorium, it will reserve part of its curling tracks after the winter Olympic games to help popularize the winter sports in China.
