Manchester City's 2-0 away loss to Tottenham Spurs on Sunday gifted Liverpool 22 points clear at the top of the Premier League standings.

City had the better of the first half and had already hit the post through Kun Aguero when they were awarded a controversial penalty by the VAR, a full 90 seconds after Aurier had challenged Raheem Sterling in the Spurs penalty area.

Hugo Lloris saved the penalty, but then appeared to bring down Sterling again as he challenged for the rebound, but although this time referee Mike Dean again pointed to the spot, this time the VAR acted to rule the decision out.

City were reduced to 10 men when Oleksander Zinchenko was sent off after seeing two yellow cards and Spurs took the lead moments afterwards when new signing Steven Bergwijn rifled home following a corner.

Heung Min-Son added a second after his shot took a big deflection to beat Ederson at the near post to give Jose Mourinho a rare win over his long standing rival.

Sunday's another game saw a goalless draw between Burnley and Arsenal. Burnley should have won when Jay Rodriguez hit the bar from close range with 10 minutes to play.

On Saturday, Liverpool crushed Southampton 4-0 at home to accumulate 73 points at the top of the standings.

All of the goals came in the second half with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain opening the scoring two minutes after the break, before Jordan Henderson added a second on the hour and Mohamed Salah rounding off a good afternoon at Anfield with goals in the 71st and 90th minute as Liverpool gave no options to one of the most in-form sides in the League.

Leicester City and Chelsea shared four goals in an entertaining game to open the weekend in the Premier League.

Chelsea coach Frank Lampard may have been disappointed by his side's failure to sign a striker in January, but central defender Antonio Rudiger doubled up in front of goal to twice cancel out Leicester goals from Harvey Barnes and Ben Chilwell.

Despite twice being pegged back, Leicester can be content with a result that leaves them third, eight points clear of Chelsea in fourth.

There is little sign of the chasing pack catching Chelsea, however, as Manchester United and Wolves failed to produce much spark in a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford.

Bruno Fernandes' debut for United after his move from Sporting club de Portugal was the main attraction of the game, but after a bright start the new arrival failed to make much of an impact and will clearly need a few games to make his influence felt on a team missing players such as Marcos Rashford.

Sheffield United got a helping hand from Crystal Palace keeper Vicente Guaita as they claimed their first away win in four games. The normally reliable Guaita dropped a corner into his own net after Sheffield had barely managed an effort on goal in the entire game as Palace have now gone seven games without a win in all competitions.

Norwich remain well adrift at the bottom despite a 0-0 draw away to Newcastle United, while West Ham United showed their problems as they surrendered a 3-1 lead to draw 3-3 at home to Brighton.

Robert Snodgrass' goals in the 45th and 57th minutes looked to have given David Moyes' men three valuable points, but Pascal Gross and the veteran Glenn Murray netted the goals that leave Brighton the happier of the two sides and West Ham in the relegation zone.

Jefferson Lerma was sent off for Bournemouth, but Eddie Howe's side still beat Aston Villa 2-1 thanks to first half goals from Phillip Billing and Nathan Ake.

Meanwhile, Theo Walcott netted an injury time winner to give Everton a 3-2 victory away to Watford, who had been 2-0 in the 45th minute, but allowed two Yerry Mina headers to level the scores in injury time.
