Bayer Leverkusen increased Werder Bremen's relegation worries after securing a 4-1 win with Kai Havertz's brace at the closing of the 26th round in Bundesliga on Monday.

From the kick-off, Leverkusen assumed possession and pressed Bremen's defense on the back foot. However, the "Green-Whites" were able to neutralize Leverkusen's offensive momentum in the opening stages.

Things changed before the half-hour mark as the "Werkself" broke the deadlock with 28 minutes played when Moussa Diaby's cross into the box found Havertz, who made no mistake to nod home the opener from close range.

The hosts suddenly sparked to life and restored parity out of the blue just two minutes later as Theodor Gebre Selassie pressed Leonardo Bittencourt's corner kick over the line.

It was a short-lived joy for the hosts as Leverkusen remained unimpressed and regained the lead after Havertz headed home Kerem Demirbay's free kick in the 33rd minute.

After the restart, Leverkusen started where they left off and left no doubt on their away victory as Havertz initiated a fast break via Diaby and Mitchell Weiser, who headed home from a central position to make it 3-1 on the scoreboards.

Bremen were unable to put up resistance whereas Leverkusen was not done with the scoring as Karim Bellarabi's pass into path allowed Demirbay to chip the ball over onrushing goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka in the closing period.

With the result, Bayer Leverkusen remains in fifth position meanwhile relegation-threatened Werder Bremen recorded their 15th loss of the season to stay in 17th place of the standings.
