Construction has now commenced on 53 projects for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, accounting for 93% of all 57 projects planned by Beijing Municipality.

The news was announced recently by Zhang Jincong, spokesperson for Beijing Major Projects Construction Headquarters Office. According to Zhang, the city plans to complete 51 of the projects by the end of this year, wrapping up venue construction in Beijing Zone and Yanqing Zone.

At present, 24 of the projects have already been completed.

Earlier this year, construction for the main structure of the National Speed Skating Oval - Beijing 2022's landmark venue commonly known as the "Ice Ribbon" - was completed following over two years of hard work.

As for venues in Yanqing Zone, around 70%-80% of projects in the district were completed last year. Meanwhile, the National Alpine Skiing Center, the National Snowmobile and Sled Center, and related infrastructure projects are all scheduled to be finished by the end of 2020.

There will be a total of four newly-constructed venues in Yanqing Zone.

"The projects in Beijing Zone are for the ice sports and ski jumping for the Beijing 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games," explained Zhang. "Currently there are 17 projects under construction in Beijing Zone, and a total of 18 projects will be finished here by the end of this year."

The city's National Stadium, also known as the Bird's Nest, is still under renovation, and will host the opening and closing ceremonies of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

In addition, construction has also started on all 31 infrastructure projects for the 2022 Games. According to Zhang, a total of 23 have been completed as of May, including the Beijing-Zhangjiakou high-speed railway, the highway between Beijing and Chongli, and the underground utility tunnel in Yanqing Competition Zone.

Another six of the infrastructure projects will be completed by the end of 2020.
