Jagiellonia Bialystok made a perfect restart to the Polish football Ekstraklasa on Sunday as they earned an important 1-0 win over Cracovia thanks to Przemyslaw Mystkowski's late goal.

In the first round since the restart of the Polish league after the coronavirus-enforced break, Cracovia hoped to return to winning ways as the team coached by Michal Probierz had notched four consecutive defeats just before the competition was suspended. However, it was Jagiellonia who took three points after Przemyslaw Mystkowski tapped home Jakub Wojcicki's cross from close range with just two minutes remaining.

The visitors were the attacking side from the first minute but it was Cracovia who created better chances. Jagiellonia's custodian Dejan Iliev saved Pelle van Amersfoort shot from 10 meters out while Michal Rakoczy hit the post with 23 minutes played. The hosts had a golden opportunity to break the deadlock also just before Jagiellonia's opener but Mateusz Wdowiak spurned the chance.

In response the visitors launched a fast attack as Makuszewski found Wojcicki on the left wing and the midfielder assisted to Mystkowski. The 22-year-old, who came on just a minute earlier, arrowed the ball into the bottom corner to secure three points for the visitors. Jagiellonia most likely killed Cracovia's title dreams as the gap between Probierz's team and the league-leaders increased to 12 points.

Legia Warsaw, who sit at the top, moved one step closer to their title by topping Lech Poznan on the road on Saturday. Tomas Pekhart was the match-winner as he found the net after a terrible mistake by Lech's goalkeeper Mickey van der Hart.

"Maybe we didn't show great football but it's important for me that we were able to win even if we had problems. In the past we took three points because we were much better than our opponents. This time we didn't play on our level but the rival didn't respond after we scored so I'm happy", said Legia coach Aleksandar Vukovic in an interview with Polish media.

Second-placed Piast Gliwice also made an effective return as the Polish champions sunk Wisla Krakow 4-0. Striker Piotr Parzyszek led the team to the huge victory contributing a brace, while Jorge Felix opened the scoring and added two assists. However, it will be difficult for Piast to defend the title as Legia maintains an 8-point distance.
