Nine Ceara players have tested positive for the novel coronavirus and four others have suspected cases, the Brazilian Serie A club said on Thursday.

Tests were conducted on 148 people at the club - including players, coaches and staff - bringing 17 positive results and seven possible infections in total.

Club doctor Gustavo Pires said all of those with positive or inconclusive results have been isolated and are receiving the necessary medical treatment. He added that 23 players had tested negative and were free to begin training.

Brazilian football has been suspended since mid-March because of the pandemic. The Brazilian Serie A championship, which had been due to begin in early May, has been postponed indefinitely.

Brazil is the worst-hit South American country by COVID-19 with 616,000 confirmed cases and more than 34,000 deaths.
