Torino had to settle for a 1-1 draw at home to Parma on Saturday as Italy's Serie A resumed following a three-month lay-off amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Torino's Cameroon defender Nicolas Nkoulou headed home from a corner after 15 minutes, before Slovakia's Juraj Kucka drilled home an equalizer for Parma at the half-hour mark in an empty Stadio Olimpico, where a minute of silence was observed to remember the country's 34,000 COVID-19 casualties.

The Turin side inched up to 28 points from 26 games to sit three points clear of the relegation zone, while Parma are eighth on 36 points.

In the day's other match, Samuel Di Carmine scored a brace for Verona in a 2-1 win over Cagliari as both sides had a man dismissed.

The home side quickly raced into a two-goal lead thanks to a header and a powerful shot from Di Carmine as Darko Lazovic hit the bar, but had Fabio Borini red-carded after a video review.

Giovanni Simeone pulled a goal back for Cagliari on 43 minutes, but his side were unable to find an equalizer, and Luca Cigarini was sent off for a second booking in the 70th minute.

Promoted Verona are two points above Parma in seventh place, while Cagliari sit 12th on 32 points as Walter Zenga made his coaching debut. The Sardinia club had hired him to replace Rolando Maran before Italy went into a two-month lockdown.
