Atletico Madrid claimed three vital points in their efforts to qualify for next season's UEFA Champions League with a 1-0 win over Real Valladolid in La Liga on Saturday.

Victor Machin's 81st minute header, which just crossed the goalline after an error from visiting keeper Jose Antonio Caro following a corner, was enough to give Atletico the win, which lifts them to third in the table after Sevilla's 0-0 draw at home to Barcelona on Friday night.

Espanyol's hopes of avoiding relegation took a knock as they lost 3-1 at home to Levante on Saturday.

Borja Mayoral put Levante ahead only for David Lopez's header to level the scores before the half hour.

Enis Bardhi put Levante back in front in the 67th minute and an own goal three minutes from time sealed Espanyol's fate in a game in which China's Wu Lei was subbed off in the 68th minute.

Real Betis coach Joan Ferrer is in danger of losing his job after his side were beaten 1-0 away to Athletic Bilbao, who took the points thanks to Inigo Martinez's first goal for the club in the eighth minute. Sergio Canales missed a late penalty for Betis, while Bilbao also hit the woodwork through Asier Villalibre and Raul Garcia.

Getafe and Eibar remain winless after three games with a 1-1 draw after Peter Etebo opened the scoring just before the half hour and Charles levelled for the visitors deep into first-half injury time.

Eibar were unlucky to be denied an 87th minute winner when VAR ruled out Pedro Bigas' goal for an offside that looked far from clear even after repeated reviews.
