Three more tennis players and coaches who have attended the Adria Tour tennis tournament in Croatia's coastal city Zadar have been diagnosed with coronavirus, the local epidemiological team announced on Monday.
While the ATP remains suspended due to the coronavirus shutdown, world No. 1 Novak Djokovic initiated the tennis tournament to promote sports and to raise funds for those in need. The seats were packed with no physical distancing, while players played basketball and interacted with fans and children last week.
The final match of the tournament was canceled abruptly on Sunday evening after Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov announced that he had tested positive for COVID-19. Late on Sunday night, tennis players who participated in Adria Tour were tested in Zadar for coronavirus. Croatian player Borna Coric who faced Dimitrov over the weekend announced on Monday via his Facebook page that he had tested positive for the coronavirus and urged everyone who was in contact with him in the last few days to get tested.
Local media reported that Djokovic's fitness coach Marko Paniki and Grigor Dimitrov's coach Kristijan Groh had also tested positive, while Djokovic did not go for testing and said he would make his decision after returning to Belgrade.
Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic also attended the tournament on Saturday and had a short meeting with tennis players. Local daily paper Jutarnjilist reported that Plenkovic will get tested on Monday.
Croatia has recorded a sudden soar of COVID-19 cases since last week after nearly a month with fewer than five daily new cases.
