Several workers are installing an umbrella-shaped pavilion, under which a shoulder press machine can display the repetitions exercisers do as well as the calories they burn.

This is one of the smart fitness facilities under installation at the Xishuiyuan residential community in Hohhot, the capital city of north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.

"We'll install 14 pieces of smart fitness equipment at Xishuiyuan in one of the old urban residential communities under renovation," said Wang Meng, deputy director of Hohhot Sports Bureau.

An exercise goer can connect their mobile phone's bluetooth to the pavilion used for exercise, and the songs on the mobile phone can come out from the loudspeaker on the roof of the pavilion, Wang said.

Smart fitness facilities can also offer tips to the users through the loudspeaker and video screen, Wang added.

Inner Mongolia will renovate old urban residential communities involving 205,000 households this year as part of government efforts to improve people's living environments.

The regional government has decided to invest 100 million yuan (around 14.26 million US dollars) to install fitness equipment, increase parking lots and barrier-free facilities.

Some communities chose to set up smart fitness equipment or renovate old fitness facilities to smart ones.

In addition to Inner Mongolia, other places in China have recently installed or will set up smart fitness equipment.

Langfang, a city in north China's Hebei province, has launched many smart fitness facilities in parks and gym venues. Locals can register and make exercise plans by scanning the QR code on the equipment.

Residents in Zibo of east China's Shandong province, Putian in southeast China's Fujian province, and some other cities have also enjoyed convenience and fun from the newly installed smart fitness facilities.
