According to the Beijing Major Project Construction Headquarters Office, the construction of projects for the Beijing Winter Olympics has been progressing smoothly despite the COVID-19 outbreak. All the new venues within the Beijing Competition Zone are on track to be completed by the end of 2020.

Construction on projects for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics began on March 31, 2017. The Beijing Competition Zone will serve as the competition venue for all ice-based events of the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. According to the construction schedule, the zone includes a total of 22 construction projects, including four newly built venues and seven remodeled ones.

The Beijing Major Project Construction Headquarters Office confirmed that a total of 16 projects are under construction in the Beijing Competition Zone, and four projects are currently in the early stages of preparation. In addition, 14 projects will be completed by the end of the year, including the National Speed Skating Oval, Capital Indoor Stadium, Wukesong Sports Center and other two remodeled venues.

The construction of the National Speed Skating Oval — Beijing 2022's landmark venue, commonly known as the "Ice Ribbon" — has drawn a huge amount of attention. At present, the roof and the curved curtain wall of the oval have been completed and interior decoration work is underway. The venue is scheduled to be completed this October.

The Wukesong Sports Center, which hosted the basketball during the Beijing 2008 Olympics, will be transformed into an ice hockey venue for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. The remodeling work is also expected to be completed in October this year.

Environmental concerns are an important part of the preparations for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. As such, all the newly constructed venues are being built in accordance with the highest national level of green construction, greatly reducing the emissions and operation costs of the venues.

The 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing will become the first Olympic event in history to power all its venues with green and renewable energies produced from clean sources.
