Argentina's top football clubs will be free to resume training on August 10 after almost five months of inactivity because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The permission extends to all top-flight men's and women's teams, Argentinian Football Association (AFA) president Claudio Tapia said on Tuesday.

"The government has authorized the resumption of training for first division clubs and other divisions will gradually follow," Tapia said following a meeting with Argentinian President Alberto Fernandez.

He added that players, coaching staff and other employees of clubs would be tested over the weekend.

The move followed calls for the training ban to be lifted by Argentinian clubs participating in this year's Copa Libertadores. South America's premier football competition will resume on September 15, having been halted in mid-March as the health crisis intensified.

The AFA, which called off the 2019-20 season in April, has not said when Argentina's first division will resume.

Argentina has over 213,000 confirmed coronavirus cases, more than 3,900 of which have been fatal, according to official figures.
