Spanish La Liga club Alaves on Wednesday confirmed Pablo Machin as their first team coach for next season.

The announcement came on the Alaves website days after the former Girona, Sevilla and Espanyol coach announced that he would not be travelling to China to take over Qingdao Huanghai "for personal reasons".

Machin will be in charge of the club from the city of Vitoria in the Basque Region of northern Spain for their centenary season and will hope for better luck than in his last two jobs.

The Spaniard was sacked by Sevilla in 2018-2019 season, and left from Espanyol after the club relegated from La Liga at the end of last season.

Machin made his name with Girona as he led the club to the top-flight in Spain before guiding them to an impressive 10th place finish in the club's first season in La Liga.

One of his favored tactics is using three central defenders and two attacking full backs, and at Alaves he will reunite with midfielder Pere Pons, who was one of his key players at Girona.
