Santos have sacked Portuguese manager Jesualdo Ferreira after just 15 matches in charge, the Brazilian Serie A club said on Wednesday.

"The Santos board announces that Jesualdo Ferreira is no longer the manager of the first team," Santos said in a brief statement in which they thanked the 74-year-old for his "extreme professionalism".

Ferreira led the team to six wins, three draws and two defeats before Brazilian football was suspended in March because of the coronavirus pandemic.

However the eight-time Brazilian Serie A champions have lost three of their four matches since football's return. Ferreira's last match was a 3-1 home defeat to Ponte Preta in the quarterfinals of the Sao Paulo championship last week.

Santos will begin their Brazilian Serie A campaign with a home clash against prompted Bragantino on Sunday.
