Armand Duplantis from Sweden set a season's best 6.07 meters in the pole vault at the Wanda Diamond League meeting on Wednesday, securing the highest outdoor pole vault jump for 26 years.

The competition in Lausanne's Place de l'Europe played host to a fascinating duel between Duplantis and two-time world champion Sam Kendricks from the United States, whose best jump was 6.02 meters.

Duplantis tried to challenge Sergei Bubka's 26-year-old outdoor record of 6.14 meters, but failed to continue after one unsuccessful attempt at 6.15 meters as darkness set in.

"In the end it got too dark to go for 6.15 meters and I felt it was unsafe to continue any further," said the world silver medalist. "I felt I was in the zone. But you have to be prudent."

"It was a fantastic evening. The conditions, crowd, competition - it was all fabulous. Sam is a fabulous competitor, and I feel we bring the best out of each other," Duplantis added.

The women's pole vault event was also won by a Swede, as Angelica Bengtsson finished with a best jump of 4.72 meters.
