Shaanxi clawed back to edge Wuhan 80-78 in the Women's Chinese Basketball Association (WCBA) league here on Friday.

Shaanxi trailed for most of the game, but outscored Wuhan 23-18 in the last quarter to grab the morale-boosting win.

"We didn't perform well in the first quarter. We had a tough start, but ultimately took our chance," Shaanxi coach Jiang E'Ying reflected.

The game was decided with the final possession. After Li Jinjun converted one of two free throws, Shaanxi went up 80-78 with 11.3 seconds remaining. On the ensuing possession, Wuhan's Liang Juanzhi missed a jumper that could have sent the match into overtime.

Shaanxi's Chen Yanyu was an assist shy of a triple-double with 21 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists. Li weighed in with 19 points.

"We played a bit tight at the start as it was our first game, but we never gave up, and finally won the game," Li said.

Wuhan got rolling midway through the first quarter, going on a 9-0 run to move ahead and setting up a 23-12 advantage as the quarter time ran out.

After Shaanxi narrowed the gap to five points, Wuhan pulled away as four players connected on 3-pointers in a row, and led 40-35 at halftime.

Shaanxi held a brief lead at 43-42 after half time, but Wuhan soon turned it around through its offensive efficiency and a solid performance on the free throw line.

Wuhan had the upper hand for most of a back-and-forth second half, heading into the final frame with a three-point margin, but had to watch as their lead slipped away.

Li Xiu led Wuhan's charge with a game-high 22 points. Ha Wenqian added 15.

"We didn't handle some big shots well due to a lack of experience," admitted Wuhan coach Li Xin.
