Robert Lewandowski scored four goals to help Bayern Munich beat Hertha Berlin 4-3 in the closing game of the third round in the Bundesliga on Sunday.

Bayern took the lead twice, but Hertha never gave up and rallied back before Lewandowski's fourth goal of the game secured all three points at home.

The visitors from the capital started well, and disrupted Bayern's build-up work in the early stages.

It was Hertha who created the first chance of the game, as Dodi Lukebakio pulled wide from a promising position following a fast break in the 9th minute.

Six minutes later, Bruno Labbadia's men thought they had opened the scoring but Jhon Cordoba's goal was ruled offside.

Bayern grew into the game as the clock ticked, and Muller's goal was reversed by the video assistant referee before Lewandowski nodded home Serge Gnabry's cross to mark his 100th goal on home soil.

After the restart, Bayern had a perfect start to the second half as Chris Richards' square ball into the area allowed Lewandowski to drill the ball from the edge of the box into the top left corner with 51 minutes played.

It looked like Bayern was on the way to an easy victory but Hertha Berlin turned up the intensity and halved the deficit only seven minutes later when Cordoba headed home Matheus Cunha's free kick.

Bayern stumbled and Hertha seized the chance to restore parity at 2-2 in the 72nd, after Cunha danced through the host's defence before beating goalkeeper Manuel Neuer into the top right corner.

It was short-lived joy for Berlin though, as Bayern took the lead again through Lewandowski, who tapped home his hat rick following Muller's assist inside the box in the 85th minute.

Hertha responded well and shocked the Bavarians with the equalizer as new arrival Jessic Ngankam scored his debut goal one minute after his substitution.

However, Bayern had the last laugh in the closing period after Maximilian Mittelstadt felled Lewandowski inside the box to concede a penalty. The Poland international stepped up and kept his nerves after beating Alexander Schwolow into the bottom left corner.

With the result, Bayern Munich moves to the fourth position meanwhile Hertha Berlin suffered its second defeat to slip to the 13th position.

"It wasn't easy at all. Our defence performance wasn't Bayern-like today but we showed great mentality and that is why we reaped all three points," Bayern head coach Hansi Flick said.

Elsewhere, Wolfsburg and Augsburg shared the spoils after playing out a goalless stalemate.
