Zhejiang came up big in the first half before getting over Fujian 96-76 in the Women's Chinese Basketball Association (WCBA) league on Tuesday.
Zhejiang outscored 52-37 at the interval, which proved to be a key part of their victory. Dong Ke'er made six 3-pointers to score 26 points. Huang Jiali shot 11 of 14 from the field for 26 points.
"Our opponents did well on making shots at the start. This is our second match of the season, and we hope to improve through each game," said Zhejiang coach Gu Jiaqing.
The two sides found their shooting range after the tip-ff, especially for Fujian who converted 4 of 5 shots beyond the arc, but Zhejiang managed a 31-26 lead after the first quarter.
Dong was a lethal weapon on offensive end, scoring 12 points down the stretch as Zhejiang rode on a 14-0 spurt to race ahead 46-27 midway through the second quarter.
Fujian cut the deficit to nine points in the third period, but their fightback was halted by Dong and Huang's combined efforts inside-out, and they could not truly threaten Zhejiang thereafter.
Sun Mengzhu led Fujian's charge with 23 points. Wei Yu-Chun pocketed 20.
"The quality of our defense slumped in the second quarter, and they pulled away from the match. We can be better than this," Fujian coach Gong Songlin commented.
