A late surge in the fourth quarter helped Beijing beat the winless Tianjin 86-64 for a three-game winning streak, while a winning second half saw Shanxi move past Shandong 84-75 in the Women's Chinese Basketball Association (WCBA) league here on Monday.

Qi Site led Beijing with 18 points. Tang Yu recorded a double-double of 15 points and 11 boards. Shi Xiufeng and Qi Yu bagged 14 and 13 respectively.

"We showed our advantage in players rotation since the third quarter, so that players were in a favorable physical condition to compete in such an intense game," said Beijing coach Zhang Yunsong.

Tianjin fought a close game for almost three quarters, but Beijing pulled away late in the third before outscoring Tianjin 29-16 in the final 10 minutes.

"We didn't show enough of a tough mentality compared with last game, but made timely adjustments at halftime," Zhang noted.

After the loss, Tianjin, Hebei and Wuhan remained the last three teams on the table; they have not won a game since the season started.

"We can see the improvement from our players in terms of their game mentality," Tianjin coach Liu Hao commented.

Shanxi trailed as many as 15 points in the first half and strived to cut the deficit to 42-40 before the interval. Led by Chinese internationals Liu Jiacen and Wutongtong, Shanxi came back with a 44-33 second half.

"It was a tough match. We didn't play at our level in the first quarter, but changed our tactics in zone defense from the second quarter," said Shanxi coach Li Ge.

Liu Jiacen pocketed a game-high 29 points and 10 rebounds. Cao Junwei led Shandong in points (26), rebounds (5), and assists (4).

In another game on Monday, Shanghai pulled off an overwhelming victory over Dongguan 68-54.

With the same three wins and one loss, both Beijing and Shanghai surpassed Inner Mongolia, which has won all its three games so far, ranking fourth and fifth respectively in the tables after the league's fourth round was over.

Shanghai left Dongguan with no chance from start to finish, leading seven points at halftime, and managed to maintain its double-digit lead for the most of the second half. Center Zhang Zhiting scored 17 points off the bench. Huang Jing contributed 16 points.

"We did a good job to stop their points from the paint, and this brought us an advantage in this match," said Shanghai coach Milos Paden, who revealed that injured guard Peng Szu-Chin will miss the first stage matches of the regular season.
