New arrival Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting provided a brace and helped Bayern Munich to progress into the German Cup's second round following a 3-0 win over Duren in the first round on Thursday.

Fifth division outfit Duren staged a courageous performance against the holder, but first-half goals from Choupo-Moting and Thomas Muller paved the way for Bayern to an expected win.

The lower league side grabbed a bright start into the clash as Marc Brasnic came close to scoring from close range in the first minute.

Duren gave Bayern a hard time in the opening stages as the visitors disrupted Bayern's build-up in the midfield.

The Bavarians needed 18 minutes to get their first effort on target, but goalkeeper Kevin Jackmuth was equal to Choupo-Moting's long shot.

However, Hansi Flick's men broke the deadlock with their next chance, as returnee Douglas Costa's through ball allowed Choupo-Moting to beat Jackmuth from inside the box in the 24th minute.

Duren responded well and produced another chance against the German giants in the 32nd minute, but Jannis Becker pulled wide from a tight angle.

Moments later, Joran Sobiech brought down Choupo-Moting inside the box to concede a penalty. Muller stepped up and made no mistake to double the lead.

The hosts continued on the front foot and should have tripled their advantage just before the break, but Jackmuth was on guard to deny Douglas Costa's shot with the outside of his boot.

After the restart, Bayern pressed Duren onto the back foot. But neither Choupo-Moting, who failed to beat Jackmuth in a one-on-one, nor Jamal Musiala, who rattled the woodwork following a solo run, was able to extend the lead.

In the 75th minute, Choupo-Moting wrapped up his brace to put the result beyond doubt with a long-range effort.

"I am very proud. We played very well and courageously against Bayern. We had a few chances but did not seize them," Duren head coach Giuseppe Brunetto said.

"We needed some time to establish our rhythm while Duren had a good start on the road. In the end I think we took a deserved win," Bayern head coach Hansi Flick said.
