Jiangsu took its third straight win in the Chinese Women's Volleyball League, beating defending champion Tianjin 3-2 in Jiangmen, China, on Saturday.
Jiangsu who had a strong start to the season with identical 3-0 win over both Henan and Hebei in its first two matches, maintained its good momentum to outlast Tianjin 19-25, 25-20, 29-27, 22-25 and 15-13.
Tianjin won the first set thanks to star spiker Zhu Ting who scored a set-high nine points with Li Yinying adding five. However, it gradually lost the advantage in the next two sets when Zhang Changning and Gong Xiangyu led Jiangsu with fast attacks and a solid defense.
Both teams frequently traded the lead and Tianjin worked hard to break even with its opponents 2-2. The vital last set saw much more tense confrontations as both sides played tit for tat, and Gong again came out to help Jiangsu edge Tianjin with successful spikes.
Gong and Zhang scored 26 and 23 for Jiangsu respectively, while Li made a match-high 33 points for Tianjin, followed by Zhu with 29 points.
In the other two games on Saturday, Zhejiang triumphed over Hebei 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-19) for its third straight win, and Sichuan overcame Henan 3-0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-23) for its first victory this season.
