Atletico Madrid complicated their qualification for the knockout stage of the UEFA Champions League when they were held to a 0-0 draw by Lokomotiv Moscow in the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.

The Spanish side had most of the play and managed 20 shots during the game, but without Luis Suarez or Diego Costa, they lacked a striker to finish off the opportunities they created.

The draw leaves Atletico with five points from four group games, two more than Lokomotiv, but with a difficult game at home to Bayern Munich next week.

Diego Simeone's men were handicapped by the loss of Costa through injury prior to kick-off, but started brightly with Joao Felix and Marcos Llorente having half chances in a positive start for the Spanish side before Lokomotiv began to gain more control in the middle of the park.

Llorente was denied by Lokomotiv keeper Guilherme Marinato just before the half hour as he fired off a snap-shot inside the penalty area, as the half ended with Atletico controling the game but without threatening the Russians' goal.

Francois Kamano was unlucky not to open the scoring just after the break but his downward header bounced over the Atletico crossbar, while at the other end shots from Saul Niguez and Koke went over the bar.

Koke had the ball in the net after 68 minutes when he fired home after a rebound following a free kick but the goal was ruled out for offside after the referee consulted VAR.

Jose Gimenez went close with a header as Atletico continued to pressure, but in the closing moments Ze Luis could have won the game for Lokomotiv only for Koke to make a last gasp clearance when he looked certain to score.
