Real Madrid's irregular season continued on a dreadful night for Zinedine Zidane's side, who not only lost 2-1 at home to Deportivo Alaves, but also saw Eden Hazard limp out of the game in the first half due to yet another injury.

Alaves took the lead in just the second minute thanks to a Lucas Perez penalty after Nacho Fernandez had been penalized for handball following a corner.

Madrid got into the game as the half progressed with Mariano Diaz a constant threat, while Alaves keeper Fernando Pacheco saved well from Toni Kroos. However, it was the visitors who doubled their lead early in the second half when Joselu took advantage of a disastrous pass from Thibaut Courtois to slip the ball into the empty Madrid goal.

Alaves then played on the break and Courtois partly redeemed himself with a fine save from Lucas, while Joselu fired over after another counterattack.

Casemiro gave Real Madrid hope from close range in the 85th minute and Isco almost saved a point when his 95th minute shot hit the bar, but it was not to be and the reigning champions have now taken just one point from the last nine.

Tony Lato's own goal 11 minutes from time gifted Atletico Madrid a 1-0 win away to Valencia.

Atletico had the best of the game, but without Luis Suarez due to coronavirus and Diego Costa with a muscle injury, it had looked as if they would fail to break down their rivals until Lato's moment of bad luck took them level with Real Sociedad at the top of the table.

Sevilla also enjoyed a narrow 1-0 win after Youssef En-Nesyri's close range 83rd minute goal decided a tight game away to Huesca.

Sevilla had most of the ball and most of the chances, but Huesca, still without a win all season, had kept them at bay until the Moroccan's fourth league goal of the campaign, decided the game and ended a week which also saw Sevilla qualify for the knockout stage of the Champions League.

Saturday kicked off with Elche and Cadiz drawing a game between two sides promoted at the end of last season 1-1.

Lucas Boye's low shot from outside of the area put Elche ahead after 37 minutes, but he let his side with 10 men after being sent off for using an elbow 10 minutes later and Alvaro Gimenez's 54th minute header saw each team take a point.

The round of matches kicked off on Friday with Valladolid and Levante also drawing 1-1 - a result that keeps Levante in the bottom three.
