The 2020 national surfing championships opened at Riyue Bay in Wanning city, South China's Hainan Province on Monday.
The championships has attracted around 380 surfers from 14 provinces and 15 clubs across the country. They will compete for 36 gold medals over nine days.
Zhou Gaoming, deputy Party secretary and mayor of Wanning, said the championships will allow for the promotion and development of surfing in Hainan and hopefully attract more young people to the sport.
Wanning, a coastal city in the east of Hainan, has 109 kilometers of coastline and the highest waves in Riyue Bay can reach up to three meters, which is extremely suitable for surfing.
