The BNP Paribas Open 2021 has been postponed due to the spread of the COVID-19. The tournament's organizers hope to reschedule it later next year, local media reported on Thursday.

"The tournament is proactively working with the ATP and WTA Tours as well as title sponsor BNP Paribas to confirm dates later in the year to hold the event. Details will be released in the near future as plans are finalized," according to a statement released by the tournament.

The BNP Paribas Open 2021 was scheduled for March 8-21 at Indian Wells, California.

"While it is very disappointing to not hold the BNP Paribas Open in March as planned, we are putting health and safety first, just as we did earlier this year," tournament director Tommy Haas said through social media.

The 2020 BNP Paribas Open was canceled on the eve of the event last March.

The pandemic already has forced organizers with other tournaments planned for the coming months to take similar considerations. The Australian Open, usually played in January, has been rescheduled for Feb. 8-21 in Melbourne.
