Goals from Manuel Akanji and Jadon Sancho helped Borussia Dortmund secure all three points on home soil against Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga on Sunday.

The Wolves started well and created the first chances in the early stages through Xaver Schlager, who pulled just wide in the 5th minute, before Yannick Gerhardt's deflected shot rattled the woodwork.

The "BVB" needed ten minutes to gain a foothold into the game and should have opened the scoring but Marco Reus wasn't able to overcome Wolfsburg goalkeeper Koen Casteels.

Dortmund continued to produce clear-cut opportunities as Erling Haaland tested Casteels, who was on guard to defuse Sancho's promising follow-up shot from very close range just before half-time.

After the restart, Casteels remained in the thick of things as he denied Haaland twice while Wout Weghorst came close in quick succession at the other end of the pitch in the 55th minute.

However, it was Dortmund who broke the deadlock in the 66th minute when Akanji headed home from Sancho's corner. Akanji almost scored another moments later but his header flew just wide.

Wolfsburg tried to respond but Dortmund stood firm and put the result beyond doubt in the dying minutes of the game when Sancho finished off a counterattack to make it 2-0.

With the result, Borussia Dortmund recorded its eighth win of the season and move up to 4th, while Wolfsburg suffered its second defeat to slump to the 6th place in the Bundesliga standings.

"In the beginning we made things difficult for ourselves as we lacked in aggressiveness. As the match progressed, we did better and created goalscoring opportunities. We were very dominant in the second half and deserved to take the lead," Dortmund head coach Edin Terzic said.

Wolfsburg head coach Oliver Glasner said, "We are very disappointed. We didn't take advantage of our chances and were too inefficient in front of goal."
