Manchester City moved within striking distance of the top of the Premier League thanks to an assured 3-1 win away to Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.

The game was all but over by half-time as Ilkay Gundogan, Phil Foden and Kevin De Bruyne ran Chelsea ragged, and the home side only found the net in the 92nd minute through Callum Hudson-Odoi.

Pep Guardiola's side are approaching their best form and totally outplayed Chelsea, who would have lost by more if it had not been for some excellent second-half saves by Edouard Mendy, who nevertheless could not halt Chelsea's slump to their fifth defeat of the season.

Leicester City moved up to third with a 2-1 win away to Newcastle United after second-half goals from James Maddison and Youri Tielemans fired the Foxes to their seventh away win of the season.

All the goals came after a dull first half, with Maddison opening the scoring in the 52nd minute and Tielemans doubling Leicester's lead 18 minutes from the end.

Andy Carroll's first goal at St James' Park in 10 years gave Newcastle late hope, but Leicester hung on for an important win.

Tottenham had an easy 3-0 win at home to Leeds United on Saturday with Harry Kane and Son Heung-min putting them 2-0 ahead by half-time before Toby Alderweireld's header from a corner in the second half sealed a win which was only spoiled by Matt Doherty's sending off in injury-time.

New coach Sam Allardyce is finding life at West Bromwich Albion difficult, as his team suffered their second home thrashing of the week as Arsenal smashed them 4-0.

West Brom went into the game following a 5-0 defeat to Leeds United, but were quickly in trouble again as Kieran Tierney and Bukayo Saka put Arsenal 2-0 up after just 28 minutes, before Alexander Lacazette completed the rout with further goals in the 60th and 64th minutes to make it a perfect Christmas period for Arsenal.

Lewis Dunk's 70th minute header saved a point for Brighton in their 3-3 draw at home to Wolves in an entertaining match on the south coast.

Aaron Connolly's 13th minute goal from close range put the home side ahead, but Wolves then went 3-1 up thanks to a Romain Saiss header, an own goal from Dan Burn and a 44th minute penalty from Ruben Neves.

Neal Maupay's penalty for Brighton at the start of the second half gave the home side the chance of a point and Dunk completed a comeback that still leaves Brighton in trouble.

Jeffrey Schlupp's fourth-minute goal and an excellent solo effort from Eberechi Eze gave Crystal Palace a 2-0 win at home to Sheffield United, who have now suffered the worst ever start to a Premier League season in the competition's 30-year history.

Friday's Premier League games saw Bruno Fernandes's penalty give Manchester United a 2-1 win at home to Aston Villa and take them level with Liverpool, while Tomas Soucek's 86th minute goal gave West Ham a 1-0 win to end Everton's four game winning run.

Liverpool end the round of matches with a difficult away game in Southampton on Monday.

Sunday's scheduled game between Burnley and Fulham has been postponed after the discovery of more COVID-19 cases at Fulham, after their midweek game at home to Tottenham was also called off due to the virus.
